ALTE KAMERADEN

JURASSIC LUNCH WITH FOREIGN ACCENT

At this stage beyond the evening of life, there’s pleasure revealed as huge as it may be, I feel it when I meet the old postal colleges on Fridays.

This last one had my dear friends Ari, JG, Jorge, Victor and those mentioned ahead, but it was very different, with Andrew, a precious loaf from the Canadian side of my family.

Shortly after being overshadowed by the beauty of the fascinating stained glass windows of the Dom Bosco Church, I interrupted the city tour of Brasilia, by his choice, to a stop at the Adega de La Havana restaurant, jammed in Vila Planalto.

He preferred to be in the crowd, but – let Andrew allow me the exaggeration – I understood the acceptance of my lunch invitation as a gesture of respect for myself and my old companions, “Mein Alte Kameraden,” with permission by Carl Teike.

He spoke English with Gérson, spoke in French with Bentes, and rehearsed all that he could of Portuguese: I think he got better words of Adriano’s dialect than tricks that Agostinho tried to teach him.

He heard a lot of jokes (even those about “gaúchos”), laughed together without understanding all of them: we saw that it wasn’t to please the group with yellow smiles, on the contrary, the spontaneity of loud noises showed big teeth.

He listened to complaints and speeches about illnesses that he doesn’t have, probably won’t have for decades, we do hope. Prostate exam? What is this? When will I do one of them? He must have asked himself, besides having gotten up from “bad words” that always come (I speak of the verb, without double sense) around medical doctor’s stories that share the same finger in different gloves.

He was invited and joined following morning at the soccer game at Corporate University of the Post Office: grateful to Sinecio for bringing the gringo and for joined him to the players, whom I also thank for the welcome, imagining the guy has shown intimacy with the round on the lawn, at least similar to his brother, Alex, that the “Little German” also took there some time ago.

Finally, he met the eclectic tribe of the sixties, still full of all vitality and good humor, marks that look out in our cheerful weekly gastronomic routine, but, unfortunately, he knew something of the sad problem of Brazilian retirees, social security loopholes and incompetence of public management, which doesn’t belong to our select group.

I think he got the best impression of all those crowns, some without hair, some with hair whitened, except those who try them (soaking them with tincture, of course) keep something close to the color of half a century ago, at least.

I have a certainty: Andrew has witnessed the healthy friendship of more than 40 years of a pact that ages with almost all the same moral values, preserved in full or adjusted to the swift, dynamic and confusing days of today.

I hope he returns to another meeting soon, before retiring himself, in time to review us all, God willing.
